Settle Into Sleep

A slow descent into rest for the very end of the day.

You do not have to hold anything else today.

Let your body find the mattress, and let it be heavy.

Feel the place where your back meets the bed, and let that place take your weight.

Now let your breath slow on its own.

You are not pushing it, only allowing it.

With each exhale, let a little more of the day leave you.

Your hands can open.

Your jaw can loosen.

If a thought arrives, let it pass like a car on a road far from this room.

You do not have to follow it anywhere.

We are going to move down your body slowly.

Feel your forehead soften.

Feel your eyes rest behind closed lids.

Feel your shoulders drop away from your ears, and your arms grow warm and still.

Feel your belly rise and fall, unhurried, the way it does when you are almost asleep.

Notice your legs, the long muscles letting go, and your feet, no longer needing to do anything at all.

There is nothing left to finish tonight.

Nothing to plan.

Nothing to fix.

The day did what it did, and it is over.

Let your breath become the quietest thing in the room.

You are safe.

You are warm.

You can sleep now.

If you have a little longer
